Usually by day 2 or 3 people feel significantly better, but maybe his case was more severe.

I've got one that is similar design, but includes wrist coverage too. $265.00 splint that Walk-in clinic put on me when I broken my wrist.

Lot cheaper at Walmart.
Too bad Walmart can't have walk in health clinics. That would put a huge dent on the health care crisis.
