It's only green for a short time. Most of the year the hills are dry brown. All that in the distance (on the right side) burned last October, but the firefighters stopped the fire when it reached the valley floor and saved us. twice! Most of the trees survived, thankfully.

Here's how it looks most of the time. Any patches of green you see are either trees or irrigated vineyards.
I'm over on the right side below that same ridge.
I grew up less than half a mile from where this picture was taken. (but it's not my picture!)

Good compost is a balance of carbon and nitrogen. You want equal parts of "greens" (green grass/leaves) to provide the nitrogen and "browns" (dried leaves/brown grass) provide the carbon. Even though poo is brown, it counts as a green because of the nitrogen content. That's good for us, because greens are rare in the summer.
