Hmmm..... get a clear tote, plus they can look thru the hardware cloth. Chicks wouldn't be so hard, but don't know what to tell you on the adults.

Zip tie a baby gate to the top of the tote. I’ve done that in a pinch. Or zip tie two laundry baskets together, one on top and one on bottom. That’s a cheap option.
