Thanks Cap. We have been doing a lot of family stuff this visit. Wearing out this poor hermit.
The Nene are up at higher elevations. Hubs went hiking in the volcano crater (Haleakala is 10,000 ft) and he didn't see any, but we have seen them before. Very compact birds, kind of brownish grey, with some dark markings. They are skittish.

Sigh.. Is the crater 10,000 ft. ? Or ???

The top of the volcano is 10k ft. They hiked down a ways from the top then back up. Looks like you are on the moon there. Look up "Haleakala" images and you will see. I don't know how to post pics on the phone unless I have taken them.

There are several different hikes. Hubs' was 8 miles or so. It's not green like that up there right now. Green comes with winter rains, but it's cool you can see all the mini volcanoes... called cinder cones, I think.
