It really is kind of big business here. You used to be able to go to the pound and find some decent dogs there. Now it's all pits and chihuhuas because the rescues can't keep up. I think it started because the pounds were killing so many dogs and cats. It's not the best fix, but pets should be neutered to eliminate the worst of the problem. You can still buy from a breeder or through private parties.
I would be surprised if there were many puppy mills left in CA. Animal control officers are pretty militant. You'd go to a breeder.
Tons here. Mostly the Amish . Plenty of others though. Dog warden says you got a stray? shoot it. Or he will come out and do it for you if you get it contained. That beagle he picked up here , he said She will be dog food in 3 days. Yup, they are killing them and feeding the meat back to the other strays.
I complain because a dog license in this county has gone up to $25 per year per dog, but we don't have so many problems like that. Animal control responds better than the sheriff!
rabies is $15./$20 and that comes with the tag and thats all we need far as I know.
The title of that article is deceptive. They are saying puppy mills are a problem because California residents are purchasing and importing dogs from puppy mills in other states. It is rare you hear of a mill in CA. Hoarders, yes, but a large scale puppy mill is a rarity here.
