did predators get them ?

Not too many predators around there with the dogs. I think is may be that some just didn't return or a weather change could have lowered the population. There was always a pretty good sized covy of about 40 quail, but the few years after the babies hatched it seemed to double.

Yeah, they live down really deep, where it's dark... and spooooky.
