Does it do something to the brick or is it for looks ?

For me it’s for looks. In the old days lime paint preserved the wood and repelled bugs. Bricks are porous and shouldn’t be painted (though I definitely have before ). The lime wash is fully washable with soap and water, so if I hate it, no big deal.
