My first chickens were Rhode island reds and buff Orpingtons. They did ok in West TN, and it does get quite hot there. Mind you, it was 96.4° at one point here today! I hope the Jubilee Orpingtons I am getting will tolerate it. I used to put wading pans in with the chickens when it's hot. Cool feet= cool chicken. I need to get the fans cleaned and set up in the big coops.

Aww, I'm sorry! It gets incredibly hot here too but my Orpingtons still do ok. The coop and run are mostly under the canopy of trees and it helps to keep them much cooler. I also keep a large open bowl of water that some of them like to stand in. I used to use a kiddy pool but it was a pain to dump out all the time.

I have 3 Buff Orps, and they're pretty and charming and lay a pretty brown egg, but good grief! They lay about three eggs in a row and then want to go broody! My EE have never even considered going broody.

Hi...I started reading this thread again a couple of weeks ago...granny if your needing somewhere for your shrimp why not use a breeder net in a larger tank...I used to keep a few baby guppies in them to stop them getting eaten.

I tried the floating plastic ones but they kept getting through the bars.
