Granny's gone and done it again

He only has them lay for 10 weeks then gets rid of them? That is weird. In my experience most of the girls don't even lay a full size egg until they have been laying for close to 2 months. Then they lay like champs through the winter until their first adult moult at about 64 weeks of age. Since I don't light the coop they don't go back to laying until late February or March. This has been true of all the chicks I've gotten that hatched in early June. The ones that came from late April/early May hatches did not lay through their first winter.
Didja ever have one of these hens?

Sweetpea is a Black Astrolorp x Silkie (as evidenced by the 5 toes) Svort Hona cross. I'm assuming the Black Silkie was her sire since the 5 toed gene doesn't often pass the second generation down of outbreeding. So with BA and Silkie, I have a good chance of her going broody.
If you go back and look at the Egg Layer stickied post there are some good links in there.
According to one study, most hens stop full speed production at 40 weeks. I'm pretty sure these gals weren't producing eggs for the grocery store, but for other purposes. We have a lot of oriental markets down here that sell to VN/Thai and other Asian people. Maybe they like the dark skinned chicken meat?
