I have never had black eyed peas. Never even seen them. Not a common staple in CA, I guess. Are they actually peas or beans or...? And what do you make red eyed gravy from and why is it lucky?


Oh bummer. Sorry about the babies. Were they tiny ones? And how did you lose a filter?


That sucks, h2o. We heard one gunshot, not very close. My sis had fireworks and booms going off for a couple of hours. She lives in the one town that allows fireworks in the whole county. At least the fire danger is low now.


Sorry Verna. How do you pick your breeding males? Is it easy to tell which males are amorous Lotharios?

Of course I CAN. I shouldn't though. Even dad ate some and had seconds. Total carbs were pretty low for both of us because of what I made, so a little splurge was okay.

I still have some. LOL I put a fudge in the freezer. candy in my room.

A group I have been working with, (quail related) finally called to talk about what they had been thinking about doing this year. I will be a big part of their expansion of building their community aspect. And they want me to vlog a day as they work, to show others what all they do, that makes them such a great business.

@Wishing4Wings, I have no idea why red eye gravy is lucky but the tradition of black eyed peas for prosperity and luck in the new year goes back to the Civil War. My mom was from the south and she always made Black Eyed peas and Red Eye gravy for New Years.

How she made Red Eye Gravy was from the 'drippings' left over from frying pork chops, added to flour and coffee. Yeah, Coronary bypass special at best which is why I don't make it.

Black eyed peas look like small navy beans with a black spot in the middle where the pea attaches to the inside of the pod.

Do you like pinto beans ? Thats the closest I can think of to compare blackeyed peas to.

Sure, pintos are good, especially refried! Yum. After I lose a bit more, I will eventually bring beans and lentils back into my diet. Sugar and starches will stay blacklisted though.
Except on special occasions.
