I read a book about the early days of the poultry boom in this part of the country, specifically Petaluma, CA (the Egg Basket of the World!). Before electricity, they would put a shoebox of hatching eggs under the wood stove and hatch them that way. They put moist soil under the straw so it didn't get too dry. I'm sure it took a lot of trial and error, but they made it work.
My mom would put a paper towel over the eggs and mist that every time she turned them. That was using a plain lightbulb for heat.
