Granny's gone and done it again

Not really. When Dad got a new car and my older sister showed an interest at about age 11, he explained how it worked, showed her the Hh pattern, and all of us kids learned it immediately. My brother and I were about 5, it was like a game. So when we were ready to drive it was no mystery. Coordinating hand, feet, eyes, clutch, brake, steering ... Yeah, that took a little practice, lol! But not that long. A couple hours maybe. Harder on the instructor than the student for sure.
So one day and then you guys could drive on the road?

Oh, no. We could manage the car in a parking lot with no other cars or distractions. Takes a lot of practice to put that together with other cars, traffic signals, pedestrians, figuring out where you want to go, noise, lane changes, etc. That all takes judgment, responses, alertness, focus, concentration. So LOTS of practice. In the parking lot. Around the block. Quiet, safe places. More challenging places. Gulp, highways! And so forth. Six months of that then you take the driving test.
