Making a garden path. Buying rocks is expensive!
Previous owners of our house poured a big area of concrete straight onto the ground and sort of smoothed the top... pretty tacky and haphazard. We broke it into sections and pieced together a walkway. Better than muddy boots on the winter and cheaper than buying flagstones!

I did the same thing in Mi.
 
Some friends of mine had some leftover cement from pouring a sidewalk. They poured it into 5-gal plastic buckets to about 2" deep (they had several), and just before it set up completely, turned the buckets over and dumped the concrete out. Made great stepping stones!
