I used a heat lamp. We live right down from a canyon. The wind in the summer mornings are nice..in the winter..brutal! My silliest would not have made it whe we dropped into single digits. I actually did lose two out of four smaller breeds..brain not working for names..and that was with a heat lamp!It was -11 when I got up this morning. Windchill around -38 but yeah, the danged wind is gusting almost to 40.
I went out and carried 4 gallons of hot water to the birds along with a dozen hot hard boiled eggs smashed for them to enjoy. They aren't fairing well in this cold. The poor little bantams are huddled in a corner and the rest are on the roost bars fluffed up like basketballs. I chipped out a water hole in one of the big bowls and it refroze within 20 minutes.
So I trudged down to the barn and dragged out a bale of straw and put it down between the two coops for extra insulation. I'm seriously afraid if I don't put up a heat lamp I will have fatalities to this cold. I have one outlet that is safely secured that I could put one in. I used it last year during the day, turned it off at night and it helped them a lot.
Every time we get weather like this all I can think is....we sold the property in Florida.WHAT WERE WE THINKING?
Thing is, they can still make a fire. If the bulb/glass breaks, it falls to the ground very..hot.Cap made a "cage" for her heat lights that stopped them from making fire or the chickens breaking it.
Me too, Blue. I was just back out. They are still huddled but I did put in a heat lamp so they were starting to move around a bit by the time I was done.Hope they do okay, MC!
I hung my lamp from a short piece of chain that is cable tied securely into a 'eyelet' hanger tightly screwed into the ceiling. Then I secured the clamp light to the chain with cable ties and everything else for that matter was secured with cable ties. The clamp light has a basket attached to the bottom of it and I double wired that into place. Whole lamp is hanging over four feet off the floor. I don't think it's going to go anywhere....I hope. I always belt and suspenders everything and plan to go out about 3 and take out more hot water. The temp is coming up in there enough that the water isn't freezing any more but it's not pleasant by a long shot.Cap made a "cage" for her heat lights that stopped them from making fire or the chickens breaking it.
That's what I'm afraid of. The older bantams seem to be handling it better than the younger ones at the moment. That would be heart breaking. I was pretty and had a killer figure. Guys in high school were scared of me i think. And i had high grades, and played sports. I was not popular.I was young snd beautiful once.
I remember it well.. ..
It was at 2:00 on a Tuesday!
I wasn't born beautiful. And I never married rich, so I get to be funny.
BA-da-dump!
Yes, the cages i made for goat heat lamp have had the goats jump right on top of the box! Even the adult goats!Me too, Blue. I was just back out. They are still huddled but I did put in a heat lamp so they were starting to move around a bit by the time I was done.
