Hi everyone and Happy Valentine's Day!
Been busy spring cleaning and working outside the last few days as the weather has been spectacular for mid Feb here.
Had to chuckle at the dogs with chickens pics. I wish I had a picture of Buck yesterday. He's half Border Collie and half some sort of hound. Just a sweet boy and my buddy. He lives to be with me when I take care of the chickens and has slowly learned for the most part to leave them alone.
He watches over the bachelors when they free range and yesterday I let them out of the run for awhile as it was almost 60° outside. I went out to feed and water and yep, Bucko was with me and took his usual guard position up at the corner of the run where he could watch the gate and door for what he considers to be escapes and threats.
Two of the roosters were out scratching around and he decided that one needed to be singled out. Like a border collie, he would crouch run a few steps, get the rooster to turn one way and if the rooster turned the other way he would repeat and try to get him to go back where HE wanted him to be. Poor Strutter after about two or three times of going through that, stood and just started screaming at Buck who was about 2 feet away from him and in his BC crouch. All I had to say to Buck was Leave It and he didn't move, allowing Strutter to put some space between himself and that pesky dog.
Buck is great with the chickens but can get a little overzealous at times and pin one to the ground under his leg. He's never killed a bird or hurt one although one or two have lost a few feathers so I never trust him unsupervised with them.
He and his sister who is half Border Collie and half Jack Russell are ten years old today. They just started acting half way intelligent last year and you can literally talk to them and they will understand simple word commands like House, Hunt (what we call hikes in the woods) and for Buck all I have to say is Chickie Birds and he is at the door and the moment he is outside he heads for the run to stand guard while I take care of him.
I asked one of the young cattle dogs yesterday if he was going to become my chicken herding buddy when Buck was no longer with us. I got a big sloppy kiss like he was saying, 'don't count on it mom'.
Somehow I admired his honesty.
@CapricornFarm, how good at you at identifying rocks. I found one down at the creek last summer that I think is a huge piece of lace granite but I'm not sure. I think I might have to cut into it to find out but I've looked at picture after picture and Lace Granite is the closest thing I can find to discribe it.
I'll get a picture of it and post it asap. Got to go out and kneed bread dough at the moment and make hamburger buns.
