I have heard horrible stories about Amish puppy mills. But there are just as many horrible mills that are not Amish. Dogs need to be socialized. Dogs that bite are sentenced to death sentence. We found our 5 in a small prefab shed. Nice and snug. With a nice sized run for them to play in. When DH found them they were happy, fat and covered with mud. He came home upset, very upset and asked what were we going to do? He told the owner that he was going to talk it over with me and be back in the morning...oh! And they had stopped feeding them. 3 month old puppies. The Father had told the son that he wouldn't give them any more puppy food so the son found a dead road kill rabbit and a dead goat kid they had to feed them. And when I say feed them, he had thrown the dead animals whole in the pen for them to gnaw on.
I was upset as my husband was and when he said, how do we choose one or two and walk away from the others? I told him I would pray about it and hope God gave me an answer by morning. Next morning first thing DH said to me was 'Well? Do you have an answer?' and without hesitation I said, let's have breakfast and go rescue 5 puppies. They were asking 25 dollars apiece for them. I asked him what he would take for all 5 of them and he said 25$. I handed him the cash and we loaded up the little heathens and brought them home. No socialization, as wild as March hares. We lost one, my sweet Sidney to Pythiosis when she was a little over a year old. Very rare parasitical infection that is always fatal. If you are curious about it look up Swamp Cancer or Pythiosis. Close as we can tell she contracted it by swimming in our pond or a smaller pond that was behind our barn. Her 4 sibs are immune to the infection. Thank God.
I like to say the surviving 4 are works in progress even at the age of 5 but considering the rough start they had in life I think they are doing fantastic.
I hate puppy mills and wish they would close them all down. I do know that Missouri has really clamped down on them lately.
