Granny's gone and done it again

So here's what I learned, and it's a custom originating from people hailng from Africa and it's a custom popular in the South.

Spend any time at all driving through Appalachia or parts of the American South, especially in rural areas, and you may get a glimpse of the phenomenon known as the bottle tree. Typically made from blue bottles, the bottle tree is said to trap evil spirits and keep them out of your home.

This is supposedly because spirits, or "haints," can't cross water, and the blue color of the bottle represents water. So the spirit gets trapped inside the bottle where it can't do any harm. This would also be why the ceilings of porches are painted blue in New Orleans. So spirits can't cross into the house.
