Granny's gone and done it again

Time to go back out and check on the coop that our pet Bielefelder rooster just got put into with the pullets from his age group and two other Bielefelder rooster are in. It's been several months since he has been with any other chicken. I was really confused until one of the pullets started to fight him and then his rooster instincts took over and he put her in her place. Then one of the other roosters wanted a piece of him and feathers flew. Hope they have settled down. It's a 12x12 1/2 coop so they can get away from each other by flying up onto the roosting bars if needed. Time to turn them out for recess. He will not know where to roost tonight so he will have to stay in the coop while the others free range.

Microchick I would be glad to share the grape jelly recipe with you. It is very easy to make.
5 cups of juice, 6 cups of sugar (or Splenda or half of each), 1 box of Sure Jel pink box, 1 teaspoon of butter. put the juice in a large pot and bring to a rolling boil. Add surejel and return to rolling boil. boil for 1 minute. add the butter (it helps keep foam down) Slowly add sugar stirring after each addition until sugar is dissolved. Test to see if it's jelled by pouring it off a spoon if it sheets its ready if not add more surejel (It's usually jelled) Pour into hot jars. put on 2 piece lids. water bath for 10 minutes. This makes 4 to 5 half pints. If you use all Splenda it takes longer to dissolve and foams more. It also makes less jelly 3 to 4 half pints.
I have used this recipe to make Strawberry/Muscadine jam use 2 cups puree strawberries and 3 cups grape juice.
Enjoy!

Hope you enjoy the concert, @ShrekDawg.

@Nomadicus we never stopped either. Also went by the birthplace of Black Jack Pershing. nope, no time for him either.

On the other hand there is an area right before Calao, Missouri where the owner has collected all sorts of derelict farm and construction equipment and lined them up at the tree line on interstate 36. There is a boat, a camper, a variety of heavy construction machinery and this:

I have three bachelor roosters, heavy bodied that room together. They are all Fayoumi crossed with Amish barnyard birds and with the exception of one named Strutter, very pretty. Strutter and I have been at war since he hopped out of the egg and as soon as he could manage it, bit me on my leg. He was about a year old and I had caught him to cut his spurs. Hanging from his heels, half way to the shop, he reached around and grabbed ahold of a chunk of my thigh, bit down hard and started twisting. I was walloping him up along side the head trying to get him loose and yelling at the top of my lungs when he didn't. I didn't want to drop him as I didn't want his beak to cut me. DH came running and when he saw what was happening, gave him a good hard head punch that caused him to let go. My leg was lacerated and bruised and took weeks to heal completely. Strutter should have went to freezer camp right then but he has another talent besides being a beautiful bird. He's great with the hens.

I got him to settle down and stop attacking me by lobbing milk jugs at him when he got out of line. So we have an uneasy peace between us right now. Two nights ago, I went out and was breaking up bread for the birds. Tossed several chunks to the bachelors, and turned my attention to the hens when I caught Strutter picking up a chunk of bread, walking over to the fence separating the bachelor pen from the main run, setting the bread down by the fence, carefully breaking it up into small bites, and calling the hens. When a bantam hen came over in response, he took a bite of bread and put it against the fence so she could reach through and claim it.

Sometimes they just astound me.

Anyhoo. DH and I took three of the cattle dogs out for a short walk. The high today is 74. Perfect for a walk in the woods. They had a great time and so did we.

Thanks Nomadicus! That sounds delicious and I'm going to try it! We don't do Splenda so we will use the 'sugar' version.

Thanks again.

Managed to finish cutting wood to size for the rest of the nest boxes. Enough for the three coops needing them. Once I finish with another coop so Ma and I can convert what we have been using for a grow out pen into a greenhouse I want to start building roll out nest boxes. I think I can make them just as good as those nearly $300 units. I have one of those to use for a pattern. The Legbars are hit or miss using it. Those sneaky hens will wait until we turn them out after 4pm to find a place outside to lay. 2 of them pulled that stunt today.Their run will be finished this week and that will stop that. It feels good to start making sawdust again. I have a stash of Maple, Walnut, and Cherry hardwood to make another round of cutting boards out of.
