My PT taught me how to do it. I turn the walker sideways and use it with one hand and plant my other hand firmly on the railing. Step down first with the weak foot, then follow with the stronger. Coming up, reverse, up with the good. So basically I'm using it like a cane but it's much more substantial.
Even when using my cane I always keep one hand firmly planted on the rail. Always have three points of contact.

These things do happen. I've tangled my feet into my cane a time or two, or kicked it, but haven't gone down yet. So far. More stable on the walker for sure.
