Granny's gone and done it again

Cynthia you should have all the professions covered by a family member! Do you remember the old movie Cheaper By the Dozen?

Granny, I have tiny veins that run when they see a needle coming! I try to drink a lot of water the day before I have to have blood drawn so the veins are more plump.

When I worked in pediatrics at a hospital the nurses used a flashlight to shine light through the tiny arms to see the veins. Now they have a thing called a vein finder.

MC, the worst place I have seen an IV inserted was in a newborn's scalp! Baby was so dehydrated it was the only vein stable enough to support the needle. Then they ran the line over the top of his head and taped it down.
Sure am glad I'm retired!
Sadly that happened to my few week old baby boy. He had the most beautiful head of hair. I was gone when they did this. I came to the hospital early in the morning. I knew they were going to put an IV in as I had talked with them over the phone. But his head? They shaved that whole side of his head, and, they had his arms held down so he wouldn't pull the IV out. Awful to see. This was back in the 70's. They were worried he had RSV. It was not seen much back then but started to show up more. He was born in 76. He'll be 50 in April. :) Just talked to him tonight. He's in Texas.
