Hypothetical : You go to school, do your work but forgot your pencil so you use ink pen . Not really thinking the teacher said use pencils. If you had remembered then you would of gotten 5 points deducted for needing to go to your locker and get one. Turn your work in , teacher takes one look at it, sees it in ink and rips it up. are we teaching math or responsibility ?
Would you be POed ? Thoughts please.

I taught 1 throught 12 & jc adjunct professor. 1-8 interraleted special ed. 7-12 sciences. I never ripped a paper in 32 years. Shpuld of had to recopy. I understand why she doesn t want math done in ink.

I dont know what I think about it. he is doing 7-8 grade math then 5th grade. He probably breezed right through it . Why not ink ? If he didnt need to erase ? I dont really understand. He should follow rules for sure and maybe took the points for not having the pencil but ripping up his work is harsh to me.
It is harsh. Jane taught for waaaay longer than I did, so she knows. I didn't try too hard to get back into it after the kids were born. Every day felt like a constant battle.

I learned a lot more about teachers from having my own kids go through school. So much variety among teachers, from solid gold all the way down to a pile of you-know-what. No matter the grade, the question I always ask the teacher/class aide/yard duty/principal What methods did you use to try to help this student reach the goals you set? If they can't answer that question quickly and in detail, I know I'm talking to a pile of poo. If they answer with something stupid, my next question is How exactly was that supposed to help this child? or maybe Can't you think of a way to teach that is not so demoralizing? or How do you know he understood what was expected of him? All of that is part of teaching and the teacher should THINK about what they are doing and how it impacts the child.

Now, I can understand ripping up the paper if it was the 10th time it was done in ink, to make an impression. But as Jane said, she never ripped up a paper in 32 years. If you have to tell a kid 10 times to use pencil and it's still not working, your methods suck. If you rip up work they have done in good faith, you are cruel. Copying it over in pencil is the best response. Also, knowing that 5th graders, especially boys, are scattered brained, it's a good idea to have a box of stubby chewed up pencils for when someone needs one. It just shouldn't be that hard.

For preschool, teaching behavior is part of the job. Set the expectations/rules. Practice the appropriate behavior several times. Reward positive behavior. Time out for repeated offenses. Young kids will act act out for any number of reasons, and often don't have the ability to explain the problem. If they are only using negative feedback, he's going to end up not liking school. You and the teacher need to come up with a plan that is positive. They need to catch him being good and focus and build on that. You can do it! should be th emotto at that age.
 
I ate 3 eggs w/tomato and cheese and 2 pieces of toast with Lisa's BB jelly. I could of ate more.
