Linda, you still here? Did you ask me this morning what HRIR means? Did you find out?
Camping how do people get hrir? Do they just breed and keep the best and just keep breeding like that? This may be a dumb question but I'm just wondering. I guess I'm asking is How do they get any heritage breed? Bet its a lot of work.

Find a good breeder. That would be the best way.

I heard of someone who found a flock on a farm, and I think it was speckled sussex, that had been breeding and growing for ages. So the heritage stock has come from situations like that. Or maybe I made that up? My brain isn't cooperating with me today.

good morning all .. I was planning on getting out to the farm and getting the brooder room all set up BUT since I was up until 5:30 am that's when enough horse pills kicked in so I could sleep farking rock. BUT when I got up at 10 it was gone HUZAH

Of course I look like I have gone 10 rounds in the ring. LOL Did get some errands run, now going to "chill" for the day.

Linda lou ...started watching Ranch on Netflix with Sam Elliot and debra winger............OMG so good and I think I am over 1/2 way there to being just like Beau in the series . LOL

I wonder what the differences are between heritage and "modern"?

I think the best way to find out would be to compare the SOP from a very early 1900's book to today's SOP  and then judge your bird.   If it's anything like AKC  the "new and improved" versions  usually aren't

x2. They use the old illustrations as a guide for speckled sussex. Sorry that's the only breed I know anything about.

DH took bubba to town with him for discgolf, haircuts, and groceries. I'm taking a long lunch, then going to plant my berry bushes.

I'm thinking blueberries on each corner of the coop, and black berries on the outside corners of the fence.

I have five blue berry plants, two black berry plants, and three raspberries. Suggestions for everything else? The garden beds are over by the pool, which gets like 10 hours of sunlight a day.

Do you have to amend the soil, to get it more acidic?

Thanks camp. I looked it up on another thread. Your right. Its nothing like I thought. I'd love to have some heritage breeds but I'm also happy with my hatchery birds. I was just curious about it. Looks like there's been some heated discussions over heritage breeds. I think I'll just pick chickens I like and if the turn out to be heritage then that will be fine. I love em no matter what they are. Heck when I get chickens I come on here to ask y'all what they are anyway lol.

Who likes acidity? The pines make it pretty acidic to begin with. That's why the azaleas do so well. I don't know if they would've leached it all out, though.

Over by the pool the grass is always super lush and green, so I guess it's happy. I thought about taking soil samples to the extension office, then I forgot.
