My rooster is looking SO much better. Between work and a bad back I wasn't able to doctor him other than the few drops of VetRX. I saw him do some dancing this morning, so I know he's feeling better.

Is it normal for chickens to nap in the sunshine? I know cats and dogs will do it. The roo likes to lay on his side and stretch out a wing in the grass. Maybe he was raised by cats. :D

It's been two weeks since my last sussex egg. I'm going to add another oyster shell dispenser and see if that helps any. I know at least one has been under the weather, but not the one that was laying. Maybe give them some pumpkin, too.

chickens love to sun bath probably more then dogs but less then cats. I hope your other chickens are not getting the pox too. I am glad he is feeling better. the coops got finished today , I went from 2 eggs a day to 5 today. ?? worming them work that fast ? maybe they just decided to start laying today but it was bigger eggs too. pictures made it to face book today. my friend took some and shared them to me. now to get them here. lol another story all together. I took some advise a week later. lol I culled the 2 leghorns. she was almost gone and he was getting better. sooo much blood !!! my hatchet needs sharpening but i did get him w/ the first lick. I felt really bad for her. she was miserable . it made me have too many roos and I watched then for a while today and my hens were whopping the leghorn roo. he wasnt doing anything.. maybe they just knew he wasnt daddy material. they probably sensed the sick in him. be my guess anyway. they sure are not dumb birds. ahh, the heart wants what the heart wants. and they sure didnt want him.

the denaguard came a day early. it says 12.5 % i have directions for use but i wrote down, denaguard H-2-12 hope its the same thing.

i am sure this will call for paybacks. and some dry pants. definitley dry pants.

i dosed the chickens and thought i had killed them. I had just put it in the water with no chance of mixing it when a little one jumps up and takes a drink right where i had poured it. she thew herself off the water , started shaking her head and gasping like they do if they are choked. I panicked and dumped the water very fast. I grabbed the hen up and gave her fresh water thinking maybe it burned her mouth . After a min. or 2 she seemed all right so i came in and tried to do some research. I wasnt finding anything that might explain this away. Until I talked to a member on here that told me Denaguard is very bitter and some people put sugar in the water with the meds. How many people would of thought chickens have defined taste buds ? Not me thats for sure. I probably should of recognized the actions though . my children acted the same way when they had to take their meds. Back to the barn, same game.

The little buggers sure do have refined taste buds. I made myself oatmeal with raisins yesterday but used some splenda brown sugar in it - just had a little left and getting rid of it. I took the leftovers out to the girls, which they usually devour before I'm back in the house and they just picked the raisins out. Wouldn't touch the oatmeal. If it had had honey or maple syrup in it, it would have been gone.

So excited about your eggs!

Wishing4Wings - the same thing happened to me with my little bantam. She had been on those eggs almost a month and I was afraid she was going to starve to death. Next morning she was out running around like she had never even been broody and I was mama. Two and a half years later, those 'babies' still think they should be hand fed. LOL

no wonder mine are skinny. even they cant stand my cooking. :( I am worried about the eggs. I know a full bator does a lot better then an empty one . I am going to take the bad eggs out tonight leaving 4 in there . i am not sure why but from the looks of this batch, i am guessing it has something to do w/ humidity. not the first one of my eggs seem to be fertile.

I didn't realize that chickens had taste buds until last night. We had boiled chicken with elbow noodles. We didn't finish all that I cooked so I took a piece and tore it up for the babies. I have been losing babies left and right and nothing I have done has stopped it. They started screaming and running like the other chicks were trying to take the food out of their mouths. I had torn up enough that there was plenty for all of them. They had a big time eating that cooked chicken. When the dish was empty, I tore up another piece for them. There was still excitement but not as much as before. This morning, no dead chicks. Maybe they needed more protein than they are getting from their food? There was still some chicken and noodles left over so I gave them some more today, after listening to them holler for hours. They ate their medicated chick starter but were still hollering. I tore up another piece of chicken and gave it to them and they acted like the first time I gave it to them last night. Just wild! I can't continue to feed them chicken but I hope that if I give it to them for a couple more days, they will get past whatever was making them die.

Why are you thinking about giving your chickens the Denaguard for?

sounds to me like you have a bad batch of feed. thats funny about them going nuts over the chicken though. as far as mine, I had a problem early in the post with mg . i worked w/ them for a long time. I do believe that its back even after rehoming 87 of them and starting again. so the denaguard will be used as a preventative . once a month in the water and eggs are safe to eat. or so i have been told. I would like to know more about that. when i am not so tired i will look into it better.

I don't think it could be the feed. I have my babies that hatched after them and some older silkies in with them and they are all eating the same thing. Can a bag of food go bad after most of it is gone? The ones dying are bantams and I have heard they are hard to raise so maybe they have a more delicate system when they are babies?
