I am still not sure what went "roaring" through my flock but got all of them through it and Tillie is healing well now.

Granny I've only been fermenting for about 3 or 4 months now. Chickens seem healthier, they really love it and from what I can tell, it does cut down cost. Cuts my food bill anywhere from a third to a half. Enola knows a lot more than I do about it. I only have 5chickens right now and it's not bad at all for me. I have 3 food safe containers from dollar tree that I keep mine in. It ferments for three days. I put a cup of feed a water an inch above the feed. Keep an eye on it to start with because the feed will swell up and you may have to add more water to get it back to an inch above the feed. I do this in one container a day. By the time you feel the last one up, the following day, the first one will have been fermenting for three days. It's ready for the chickens. Ii get a big bowl and a pair of my drawers (shut up twist) to strain the water out of the feed so it's not real watery. Feed it to the chickens. I then pour the water back into the empty container and add another half cup of feed to it. You may have to add a little more water . I ster mine twice a day. All three containers. Don't put the lids on the containers tight. It needs to get air or you'll be cleaning up a mess. I do mine in the house. I was leaving some Fed in the containers and just added more but it smelt terrible. That's why I started emptying the whole container and just reusing the water. I may not be doing it right but the chickens love it. Enola should be back on in a week or so. Or it sounds like Jane has a lot of experience too. Might want to ask one of them. And if this isn't the correct way of doing it, someone please speak up. This is just worked best for me so far.

I was just reading Janes link. she mentions yeast then dont say where /how to add it. I think I might be reading it wrong but i am going to agree with Two Crows. it seems like too much work to me. probiotics i can buy. I did however read her home made food and it sounded nice. a few good tips on that blog. it was the orange yolks i was reading.

i need to get off my butt for a while. do something even if its wrong. I picture Twist at the farm with coffee and smokes in hand and his nose pressed against a window watching the road.

Give granny a kiss for me. hahaa

Hope someone can answer this before I leave this evening. For those of you that use fermented feed, I'm leaving this evening and returning Sunday midday. Can I leave ff that long without it molding as long a there's an inch of water above the feed. I usually stir twice a day. It's in the house up on a shelf. I don't think it should get no hotter then 80 degrees where it's at. Thanks

if water is covering it then it shouldn't mold..have a good time with your family and safe travels...

wishing, was it you that said i had pretty good memory? read an artical today about dementia and how having a large social network of friends can deminish symptoms by 60 % !

If that's the case, I better keep checking in! My brain is questionable on a good day.

You don't need to add yeast to get fermented feed. Spores are all around us, so it will be there. Same source as the sour in sourdough bread. That gardenbetty site from jane is the best info I've seen. I'm getting close to trying it, especially for the tinys.
