GRAPHIC PICS of my day learning to caponize

Wish me luck. I'm finally nearly ready to give this a shot. I've got the tools ready. I've got two birds who are VERY hungry and thirsty ;) And I've almost got my courage screwed up.
As luck would have it, my partner's not feeling well today, so I'm all on my own. I expect I'll lose both birds, which is partly why I chose two of our oldest cockerels. Because when I'm done there will be enough meat to go into a soup for tomorrow's dinner. They're nearly twelve weeks. They've had an excellent life. And someone's got to be the first....

Good luck to you! (And the birds!

You can do it. Slow and steady, then get them back to food and water and they won't even know they are missing a few parts.

Good luck Margaret, Practice is the name of the game. And you have to start somewhere. Twelve weeks old is a little big but not too big.

How did it go? I'm very anxious to hear. I'm so in awe of you who jump in and learn on your own.

I hope everything goes well for you today. Experience is the most important thing for you to gain. Have you watched the CD? I watch mine over and over, and each time I see something I'd missed before.

A small group of Okies got together yesterday. Rinda caponized six successfully without any help. Go Rinda! Mitzi did three, and I did two juveniles (4 months old) and three six-week-olds (NN, Wheaten Maran, Cream Legbar). We did not have any losses, and all testes were removed intact. There were two Wyandottes that had the first incision, but both had opaque membranes, and both had unexplained bleeding, so we decided not to continue.

Are you talking about the DVD that came with the tools? I need to see what you all are seeing. I've got 5 at least of the 4 wk olds. The small batch of one ea of basque and coronation sussex are both female I believe but the new 11 I hatched 3 days ago are all standing tall and challaging each other. Mercy. They are so small and timid. Terrified of me They are SBEL's super blue egg layers. Crested Cream Legbar roo over white or exch leghorn. The 4 week olds are the same and act like totally different breed. They were running all over and running to the food. I can't get them out of the corner at all while I am in there. I put the 2 week old coronation sussex in with them to maybe teach them to eat the fermented food, but she's scared and hollaring. Maybe they'll all calm down later.

Yes. I meant the DVD that came with the double set. I can't understand what's being said, but watching people work is a great way to learn.

Thanks for the encouragement Maggiesdad and LindaB220 and Poco Pollo and Ksane!

Well, one boy went under the knife so far. And I'm pretty sure I misplaced the incision. I think I saw where the hip socket area was. So I backed off, superglued him shut, and put him back in the wire cage. He'll get FF in a little bit. Then I'll try my hand with boy #2.

Edited to add: No, Poco, I don't have the CD. I wish I did! But I've watched some videos ... which I clearly need to rewatch!

Hi. Just wondering if you are still giving classes?
Yes. If you have a group in MO interested, I can come to you. Send me a PM and we can talk about this more.

I'll look to see if I have an extra disc. I thought I was down to the last two, which I handed out at Saturday's clinic. I hope I'm wrong.
