GRAPHIC PICS of my day learning to caponize

Hi from NC! I had no idea caponizing was a "thing" until last week when I suddenly wondered "how do you neuter a rooster?" Now, after a week of reading all the caponizing info I can find, I am very interested in trying this. If there is anyone in NC, VA or SC who knows how to do it or wants to try to learn together, please let me know! I also want to buy a Chinese kit next time there are enough people to make an order. Thanks guys... all your info is so helpful and you rock!

Where are you located? I am in York, SC and have some of the same issues in learning to Caponize.
I have found a couple people who are willing to teach but have not worked out he details, and timing.
I have both of the tool kits also.

Ok I should finally have some boys to try out my new tools this season. I have some 3 week olds, gonna wait till 6 weeks unless I still can't determine sex (pea combs). Is 6 weeks too early?
so from my understanding there is a film/casing around the testes and this is hard to open correctly. Is this correct?
Edited to add: And I see there is a bungee to tie down the wings, is there any description exactly how to do that? hard to tell from pics. I would love one of those chairs the chinese use! You can do it all from the comfort of your living room, lol!

These are not the best pics, just snapped them moments ago, and my camera doesn't like arms length focus.

This is an elastic band about the size of a headband

imagine both wings are my fingers, they will be held together close to the spine of the bird

put one loop into the other

like so

This way you can pull it tight enough, but it still has give.

I'm originally from Rock Hill, but now live near Greensboro. My parents live in York :p

I definitely would be willing to drive there or to host here, whatever works better logistically. I don't have any roos to work on at the moment, although one aggressive australorp roo has gone at me too many times and will probably head to freezer camp soon, so I might practice on him as soon as I pull him from the cone.

tools came in! Thanks poco pollo!
Yea, I do pull the skin, but the operation takes me way too long. About 1.5-2 hrs. By the time i release the rib spreaders, its still a significant gaping hole. Lost 2 birds about 2-3 days afterwards because they didn't heal, thus the sutures. Hopefully this set will reduce my time to about 4-5 minutes at most.

what about super glue? has anyone used that for the incision? I've read some don't use anything, but wanted to see

Thank you so much! Awesome pics :)

I have never tried it, super glue. Really they heal great w/o closing, in about a day it is all scabbed over and closed on it's own (maybe 1.5 days), it's under the wing so not open to the dirt and air or other chickens seeing it or pecking at it.

I'm down in Atlanta - chickenless at the moment, but would jump on the chance to learn if there's something within a state or two. :)

Greetings!

I sent paypal invoices for shipping and handling to folks who ordered tools.  Send me a PM if you don't see your invoice.  I can put boxes in the mail Monday if your payment comes through today.

Do you have any extra? Or maybe a link to a place a person can get good tools? I totally missed this...

Hi, Big Bird Nano -

I'm in your state and just received the tool set from Poco. I'm a while before I'll have chicks to work with, but I'd be willing to meet up and work together if we're not too far apart.

I've done the procedure before, with a friend, but couldn't find the "jewels". This was before this thread existed, with such good photos & troubleshooting, and using the awful Nasco set. Three out of four survived, but again no successful caponizing.

Any other MN caponizers out there? Even Western Wisconsonites?
