GRAPHIC PICS of my day learning to caponize

A juanmmg54:

Here I put the photo, , maybe the only thing different is the Polipotomo, is practical because you only need one hand to use it; separator is also practical.)

Into account the question of whether bleed a lot when the comb and wattle are cut, the answer is no, quickly cuts using a cotton swab and mercurochrome. Keep in mind that only cut, making sure to leave the base thereof thereby manages not to cut virtually any blood vessel.)

Success!
2 for 2 yesterday and doing well today, though some healthy doses of 'stink eye' as I check on them.

Had three 6 1/2 week birds - in hindsight, one was much less 'male' in developing appearance. Lack of testes and likely oviduct confirmed that she was a mis-identified FryPan Special.

I used the Chinese Capon Tool set (thanks Poco Pollo for you ordering assistance!)
The spreaders work amazingly! The scoop-style forceps were very useful. I just couldn't get the probe w/ thread to loop behind the testes. Ended up grabbing with the forceps, lifting and twisting. Out they came. One testicle did rupture, but I think still came out in one piece. Really hoping there wasn't any left on the vas deferens. I live in town, so a noisy slip will not do.

Think my entry was too far down the side and should have been higher near spine. Some of the previously posted photos suggested the cut was much higher and the testes were easily visible and close to the cut. I just could not see or access the second testicle; but just having success with a cut on each side has been a huge confidence booster. I will learn the one cut method - just will be slowly in small batches.

Thanks for all of the discussion on this thread! This has been a very useful and supportive group.

@ juanmmg54 - That's a nice tool kit!

Are you able to get both testes with one incision? Or do you make two incisions?

***

@bhaus -

eagleeyyice posted a link in his post #1656 - in that article is a link to an old Sears manual. That old line drawing was the one where it actually clicked for me where the entry was supposed to be located. I have found that entries closer to the spine bleed more. But then I haven't mastered taking both from one side yet, either.

Success!

Hurray! Success! This warms my heart. Thank you so much for posting. If you can't get the wire/thread tool around the testicle, it's probably because the membrane around the testicle is preventing access. You can use your forceps tool to gently tear the membrane from the testicle. This, as with most things, requires practice and patience. A little nip may be all you need, but sometimes one has to pull, stretch, and use tiny scissors or the sharp end of a probe to get the membrane to break. Think of this membrane as the scrotum surrounding the testicles. Without this membrane, roosters would have bruised man parts with all the running and jumping they do.

I wonder in countries where it is illegal to caponize do they make stallions or neuter dogs and cats?

Are you actually asking me, or were you just trying to be right? Because if you really want to know I'll spend some time and do some research. Right off the bat I found something in the UK that only trained vets can perform surgery on an animal. The exception being livestock, with the exception of making an entry into the body cavity. I imagine the reason for that is that there are a lot of people who don't know what they're doing out there, and would be doing far more harm than good with any "treatment" they cook up. Also, typically castration on animals is done with a local anesthetic, and I'm sure you know those bits and pieces are on the outside of the body and therefore have a far higher survival rate.

I asked kind of tongue in cheek because it seams silly to ban it on roosters and not ALL animals if you where going to ban it.

The countries that don't allow it, don't have an issue w/ a vet doing it under anesthesia like it is done here for dogs and cats, their issue is non vets and no anesthesia.

I often wonder though in those areas who is sitting w/ binoculars peering in the kitchen window to bust in on you when you make your first cut???

Caponized two cockerels for two friends today. I was able to take both testicles from the right side on the first one, but the second one required a second incision. Both are eating and drinking, and giving me the stink eye, so I think they will both be fine.
