We live on 4 acres of pasture grass, we don't treat the lawn and it's the original pasture grass.

When I mow can I put the clippings in the coop instead of buying or finding hay? Lately they have been going thru hay and keep kicking a bunch out of the coop and it's kinda hard to get more where we live.

What are other things I can put in the coop? It's an old camper and the linoleum floors are very slippery.

thanks everyone

I don't see why not. We use the grass from our field and yard for our run. The chickens love digging through it for bugs and other goodies.

I've also put grass straight from the mower in, one just needs to be careful with what fertilizers or other chemicals are put on the lawn. They also seem to prefer it fresh not put in a trash bag.

I love using grass clippings and fresh cut hay in my coops. They pick through it to find left over seed and bugs that didn't get away from the mower in time and they eat the grass itself. It makes the coops smell wonderful! I have a very large mostly wire hutch that I stuff full every year so I don't have to buy bedding during the winter ;)

I have never thought about using grass clippings in the nest boxes in place of straw that's a great idea.
