But The Chicken Whisperer Podcast just did a great episode regarding posturing your flock and the short answer is that grass itself isn't a great diet for chickens but clover or other legumes are much better pasture for your flock.

I went to a chicken talk given at a sustainable living venue several years ago and was appalled that the speaker gave the erroneous impression that they could get the bulk of their nutrition from the normal city backyard and table scraps.
I could just imagine people leaving there getting chickens, not buying them feed and wondering what went wrong.

Grasses are very poor quality forage for chickens and unless kept mowed so new shoots can be eaten, they will largely ignore it. I plant a variety of clovers, alfalfa, beets, radish, forage type turnips and seasonally winter peas or buckwheat.
You can buy those seeds in bulk from places like Hummert's International for a fair price and continue to plant if you rotate paddocks or for free ranging.
