Grass sod question

In a really huge run, a mixed planting is best anyway. Think pasture mix, or wildlife blend, not only a grass monoculture. In most runs, every plant gets eaten pretty fast, unless they just can't stand the taste. Then wood chips, shavings, and leaves and some grass clippings work into a great mulch and run base.
Make certain that your run drains well! If it's in a low spot, do whatever it takes to raise it, and provide drainage BEFORE fencing it and having your chickens there.

You can buy foraging mixes (seed). I got some on Etsy (supporting the small businesses), but they are easy to find on the Internet. Unless you use a grazing frame in the run, as others have said, your chickens will decimate the seedlings in no time flat.
