I can't tell you how much I love Barred Rock roosters. I've had several of them over the years, both pure and crosses and they are fabulous, hatched out many, many sons from them. This guy is my current breeding Barred Plymouth Rock. You'd never know it, but he is 1/4 Delaware, his grandfather is the rooster painted in my avatar, Isaac. Here is Atlas.

I like the DelaRocks, mainly because all those males coming out of Isaac's Delaware line are super sweet and easygoing. Temperament is paramount here.

We could probably ask speckledhen what barred Rock and Delaware give, I'm sure she's done that...
I haven't done that cross, but I was surprised when I bred a Delaware to Jersey giant girls and got some black and some barred progeny. Then I was more surprised when I bred him to brown EE's and got some beautiful white girls and white boys with black neck and tail feathers. They were stunning.
The only thing I was considering in this breeding program I was going for early layers and egg production and I was also trying for pink eggs, which I am gotting now. All the girls from my own breedings have started laying between 4 months 5 days and five and a half months. The ones starting at the five and a half month mark were June babies who started laying in the short cold days of November.
They've all beaten my purchased birds as far as POL goes.

I got some 10 week old chicks from a guy who has free range barred rocks and buff orphingtons (1 rooster with several hens of both breeds-all adults look purebred) I think some are crossed. Just wondering if anyone knows what that cross could look like. The ones I have, three have slightly barred bodies with very faint, almost white neck feathers and one has dark barring in front and back with a little lighter around shoulder area. My question is does the buff color crossed with barred give you that faded washed out look? Any info would be appreciated.

speckledhen- Yes they are a favorite, the only thing I don't like about them is that it takes some generations of breeding to get the barred out, his sons mother is actually a coco maroon, but you would never tell because of how light his son is. By the way very beautiful rooster I love how he has more white in him. :)

KeriT- This is what a barred buff cross would look like...

Desiredfarm18- thank you. My chicks don't have any red at all, only shades of black and white. Is there a reason they are colored the way they are? I thought barred rocks are pretty uniform in this coloring. The guys barred rock rooster did have a very light colored head and neck but he said that his dad use to show him. I don't think it looked like a pure bred barred rock but how could he be shown if that's the case?

Differnt breeds of chicks have differnt colors on them. When they are adults they usually will have gotten rid of their baby feathers and grown a new coat with a differnt color. (The chicken world can get very confusing) Well my barred rock rooster is actually a pure bred. I got him from this site actually, with 5 others who are differnt breeds from him.
