Was strolling thru Costco today and wanted to see what they had for gardening. There before my eyes was this double height 4' x 4' raised planting bed of heavy plastic (like Little Tykes ) construction. It also had a clear plastic top that had zippers so you could open to a fine mesh screen. My imagination quickly pictured baby chicks . You start out with a single height planting bed and a brooder lamp over it. As they get larger add on the second height addition. If it's warm enough put the plastic top on and upzip so they get ventilation (over their heads) and place outside.

It was called something like" Lifetime raised planting bed" with a 10 yr. limited warranty etc. $ 99. The bad thing it is very heavy to lift - a badder thing(for me) is it won't fit in a little hybrid car. There is no way I could unload it at home. As soon as I mentioned it would make a great brooder, my brother left me standing alone there in the store. I'm lucky I didn't have to walk home.

I do think it could be ideal for someone who was born" carpentry challenged" It seemed pretty much indestructable. You can remove the plastic top. You can also use it as two separate lower planting beds - I'm thinking great with sand, etc. for real dust bathing and so on. Or fill one as a real planting bed and grow the chickies their own favorite greens to nibble on. See how versatile it is. You can tell your spouse it's just for gardening and then when you set it up say "Ya know I bet it would be great as a temporary(HA!) brooder, etc. There you go.

Mods if this is in the wrong place please move it. Thank you. PS My brother did suggest I see if it's available on line and how much delivery would be.

This is a great idea! I will have to see if it is available online.
