Great shopping trip, nest box ?

That picture lies. I'm inside warming up so will double check but i think that perch is about 4 inches away and 3 inches lower than the box. It happened to already be there so maybe close enough? I'll check shortly, won't be hard to move over a few inches either way. Easy to increase the height of that stopper also, it's 4 inches from the floor right now.

Think they'll want it darker? Some use curtains or fronts I know. I could always close them up a bit. On a warmer day though!
I should have mentioned that what I saw may have been an optical illusion due to camera angle...sound close enough, time till tell.

Curtains....meh.....thinks they are silly and unnecessary.
As long as they feel safe, they don't need darkness.
I'd leave as is, put fake eggs in all...see if they like the one with the board(darker) before bothering any curtaining.

Yup I double checked, only 6 inches away horizontally, wth the perch a bit lower, yes 4 inches lower exactly. Do I need to raise that? I think it's still comfortable step in distance. Lucky placement.

I have black upholstery vinyl, IF they seem to like darker better I could shrink the openings with that. No need to call it a curtain . But no ones laid an egg here yet so might not know for a bit. I have 22 week olds, should be soon.

So likely no harm in making the top roost space?

A poop board is best be 24" deep, roost centered about 8" above the board....or they may 'miss' the board....course they could still roost on edge of board with butt over edge and poop on nest perch.

Chickens just don't care who's going to step in what do they. I still might enlarge that though, hate to lose a spot for babies to hide mostly.

Interestingly the meanest and reddest of the pullets was seen peacefully eating with a cockerel today.

I built a carport for my Jeep out of those and broke all the rules on slope. I probably only had half the recommended slope and never had a problem after several 12-16"+ snowfalls and one severe hail storm but I over built the wooden structure to compensate. Make sure you use the recommended tek screws and torque down as specified and use the wooden support boards that match the contour of the grooves. If you feel the need a stiff bristle shop broom will pull the excess snow off.

Buildings collapse here every winter from snow load so they'll need to be watched.

I'll look up recommended hardware for them, only ever installed them as walls so far.
