Green Cheek Conure

i agree, 300 for a 6 month old petstore green cheek is ALOT of money, you can get some of the more expensive color mutations for that.

my other worry with petstore birds is weaning and socilization, weaning is done in a way called force weaning, when they decide the bird is old enough they give him a bowl and dont feed him forumlar, essentially force him to eat the 'grown up' food..., this is a very unnatural way of weaning and has been highly documented to cause problems later in the birds life.
and only being handled occasionally by 1 person for 6 months...you might end up with some work on your hands to 'tame' and socilize the little guy...
conures can be hard to socilize simply because they think they are huge birds and have huge personallities and big attitudes to match.

they are wonderfull little conures though and a great choice for a first parrot if your not interested in teils or keets, compared to other conures they are relitivly quite...

but

they need a LARGe amount of space considering how small they are, with a minimum suggested cage size of 24" x 24" (the hagen flight cages are very popular) this seems huge considering the size of the bird, but remember, these little guys will use every inch of that space. they also need lots of toys...a bored conure is a loud conure lol.

if your realy interested id personally suggest you look into breeders.

however if this little guy has tugged on your heart strings...well they choose us lol.

but i wouldnt pay more than $150 for a normal green cheek or $250 for a yellow sided or pinapple. $300 would be a maBE for an older turquoise...

I love our green cheek conure. He does very well with our 7, 4, and two year old. Easily handled, and loves to travel around the house on anyone's shoulder. He was pretty easy to train, and is very quiet for a bird, only complaining if his food gets low (he can be picky).

I got my Greenwing Macaw from a chain store, which I didn't ever think I would do. They were going to move him to another store as soon as that store got a big enough cage. Oscar had been at the one store for at least six months. He got odds and ends of attention from a variety of staff, but nobody really knew much from the big birds. Oscar and I instantly bonded. There happened to be a sale when I got him for anyone who had one of their cards (coupon cards that all stores seem to have now) so 10% off the price was over $100, plus Oscar was on sale because he was almost a year old. The store did not cut the price, but they did let me pay over the course of two months. I borrowed the money from my 401K that was tanking at the time anyway.

I have never regretted it for a moment. Greenwings are intelligent but can be very sensistive. Oscar has been a wonderful, happy, laid back bird. Birds often choose their own people and if you seem to instantly have a good rapport with the bird, that could be telling you that you are meant to be together. I think there is the extra gratitude they have for taking them home from an environment where people poke and prod and window shop and judge. I know this post is from last fall. What happened?

That is actually a very good price for a green cheek. I have a retired pair, my very first pair of conures and have had them 22 years now. My pairs have a home forever with me that is forsure. Just make sure if you and when you buy one, everyone in the house handle the new pet.
