No. Easter Egger is what you usually get from hatchery. It can carry all the features of an Amercauna but usually has green or willow colored legs and can lack a muff and beard.

Amercaunas are pure bred, usually have slate feet and a beard and muff are apa standard and always lay a blue/green egg. The only way to know you are getting a pure Amercaunas is to purchase from a good breeder.

My birds who are actually EE's lay pink egg, they were sold as Amercaunas.

So are there any hatcheries you can trust to get true Amerucanas? I was thinking of ordering from the PetChicken site since I don't want but a few.
Is there a better choice?

RosyPosy, your odds of getting an Ameraucana from a hatchery are very slim, if not impossible. What color is the hen?? Ameraucanas only come in certain colors, unlike EEs, who can come in ANY color. Also, does she have a beard and muffs?

City Girl, nope. They will tell you they are Americanas or Araucanas, but do not believe them. They are mass producers, they could care less what you think it is, as long as you buy it. You can only be sure you are getting Ameraucanas if you get them from a breeder, and sometimes that doesnt work! Linda Hamid's site said that if they spell the name wrong, dont buy from them. I've seen listings on Eggbid where they say Ameraucanas, or even True Araucanas, and they were Easter Eggers. Some people are just not well informed. The only sure way it a breeder, make sure you question them and others who might have purchased from them to know you're getting something good. I have 6 Pure Ameraucanas. Blues, Blacks and a Splash. Im sure they are Ameraucanas because they came from Lisa Cree, who is a well known Ameraucana breeder. I also have EEs', and I was caught in the Americana thing when I was younger, because I had no clue. The feedstore still sells them as Americanas. Atleast they could spell the name right! lol.

It can get frustrating when going through the Ameraucana/EE/Araucana thing, especially when you have to repeat it all the time,lol. Hopefully people will read this and realize the differences. Hopefully.

Ooohhhhhh....

So if I wanted to get chickens that lay mostly greenish or bluish eggs that had really great , sweet personalities, will Easter Eggers work just fine or do I need to slog ahead and find a true honest breeder? I have no desire to breed chickens so pedigree doesn't so much matter. I really just want friendly chickens with fun egg colors. Well, truthfully, I really covet the poo to put in my garden, but fun pets with cool eggs would be a great bonus to the poo!

I don't think you'd have to go through the trouble of finding and buying through a breeder. I have Ameri-whatevers through TSC from Mt. Healthy, and although about half of them are EE's, some of them look (to me) like Ameracaunas. They all have great personalities, so unless you're interested in showing or always want the green eggs, go ahead and get from a hatchery.

Mine haven't started laying yet; but just because they're not a pure-bred, doesn't mean you won't get fun eggs. And besides, who cares what breed they are?!!!?!?! Just so long as they're nice and you like them. (And the cool-egg thing is nice.

My EEs have awesome personalities and lay colorful eggs. Im just saying, Easter Eggers are sold by hatcheries. If you want Ameraucanas, go to a breeder. Some of the birds from hatcheries will look like Ameraucanas because they have them in their backgrounds I believe, but that doesnt make them an Ameraucana. I own both, and dont plan on breeding, but I like to have True Ameraucanas because they are really cool. But if you just want colorful eggs and personalities that are great, then go for EEs! I have one EE cockeral named Brutus that sits on the door waiting for me to come into the coop. It sure scares me every time I open it and he's flapping in my face,lol.

I think you will be happy with EE if you just want the pretty colored eggs. I get the prettiest eggs from mine and they are good sized eggs. I some times give my eggs away to other people and they just love them. I'll warn you once the colored egg bug hits you, you can't have enough of them. I'm going to try and get the more pure Ameraucanas or Araucanas next year. LOL

Great! I won't stress over it then. Really just want nice birds with sweet dispositions.
Now if only I can get the coop built...
