It's the chick fluff that's dyed, as the feathers grow in, that sheds, and they'll no longer be dyed. Never used red, to a chicken red = food, and the pecking can be brutial.

You could re-dye it when feathers come in. All along it will molt and get new feathers, though, so you will have to do it again every now and then. The dye might also fade over time, I would think.

Good advice about not dyeing them red.

Theres no real point to it, they are only that color up until they get there
adult feathers. Then they will be white or whatever natural color they are
for the rest of there life.

oh coolio. i think my chick id dead now. it was making noises and then the temp went down. no more noises. how can i tell

This link my be helpful to how it's done.

IT DOES NOT HURT THE CHICK!! You use food coloring which it veggie based. It was orginally used to mark certain birds in flocks by scienentist. Then the poultry industry began to use it for fun.

ETA: I think the only time it's really harmful is the fact that people will buy them at easter time for their kids and when the chicken grows and the novlety wears off the end up with a chicken they don't want. the chicken suffers for this. You do need to watch out though. It is illegal to SELL chicks that are colored in some states. But I think it's fine if you do it for your self.

I will tell you why it hurts the chicken.....

It is a marketing idea to sell these chicks to every idiot who walks by it and says......aaahhhh a pink chicken! Then they have their stupid parents buy them because it's all cute and colored. Then it grows up, it's not pink or blue and they dump it on a farm or release it!!

Ducks included

yes, it's illegal in many states for a reason! Leads to more abandoned animals because of impulse buying due to it's "cute color"
I don't support selling them but if you have a chicken and want it blue that's a different story!
