Green Mountain Organic vs. Poulin

My local feed store has one kind of organic feed that is from a local feed company with a bad reputation for horse feed. I would never touch them for my horses or dogs and would certainly not for my chickens. You can see the difference when you switch horses off their feed. So when it came time to buy a bag of grower feed I went with Poulin over "organic". Poulin is known for good quality feed. Horses look much better on their feed. The ingredients are a better quality. My thought was the same as yours - that once the chickens start laying I might start looking for anther organic feed option. But for now I am quite happy.

Thanks so much everyone for your thoughts... Ugh!!! So much to decide. Just want healthy girls and tasty, healthy eggs... I'll have to find out what kind of grower our local store carries, maybe that will answer the question until I need layer!!!

hi i'm in vermont and am going to start my chicks on the green mountain organic with the next bag

i hatched the chicks myself and started them on blue seal home fresh medicated because i was worried about them not being vaccinated

went to a lecture put on by poulin's feed and guys farm and yard and came away thinking that i'd use either of their products, they both are using ingredients that act as natural antibiotic

i decided on the green mountain over the poulin because i want to go organic, and i used to live in bethel

how are other people doing with green mountain?

You may consider what I do, I buy the best/cheapest close to natural pelleted feed I can find and leave the "organic" part up to free ranging. I get vegetable and fruit scraps for them. The problem I have with organic is #1 cost and #2 is trust.

Another option is a topic I shared a few days ago about Azure Standard.. Azure is a co op type business out of Oregon. You create a free account, call them to see if there is a drop off point around you or what you can do to become a drop off point. Each drop off point has to have a minimum order of $550 BUT as an individual, your order only has to be $50..and they charge NO shipping fees. They drop once a month.

They carry organic feed and soy / corn free feed plus tons of organics, household items, etc and their prices are very, very good.

The thing about this company..they keep the Biblical laws on farming. The university has been out there many times trying to figure out why their soil is so good...they also sell many grains and other poultry products. They really care about what they offer their customers..you might want to check their feeds out..

They are a very good outfit great products they have about 2000 acres they farm with. I think they are Mennonites (the beard thing) nice folks the ones I met.
