Green thumb is itching, anyone else?

I took part in a squash / gourd seed swap and got my seeds today, woo hoo I'll be pouring through them for a few days looking up all the varieties online. I think I will only need 2 additional squash from the catalogs.

I found that a nursery down the road an hour or so from me is having a tomato fest couple of days. I think I will have to stop in and see what they offer. We are looking for as many heirloom types as possible so we can have some good seeds for our garden in future years.

Hey Carol's clucks, I have several heirloom tomato seeds I can spare, I originally got them from SeedSavers and I grew 4 varieties last year and I was pretty impressed with the taste of their brandywine, the quantity of the roma and the beauty/holding period of their powers heirloom yellow tomatoes. I'll mail you some if you like and I'll cut out the pictures out of my old catalog so you can see what they look like, I'm not going to need all these seeds in my itty bitty garden, so I may as well give them away while they can still germinate.

On another note, to all you gardeners out there, I live in Southern California so I get to start my seedlings ridiculously early; that said I'm having an issue with my seedlings drooping, namely my broccoli seedlings, they grow a couple inches tall and then they fall over. I have a mini greenhouse going inside and I am wondering if its too warm for them, if they need airflow, if their roots are too moist, if there isn't enough light or if they need more liquid fertalizer. Can someone with experience tell me why seedlings droop? And how long do I keep these seedlings inside? Its my second year gardening so I'm trying more things out this year. Thanks!

I would love some seeds!! And I am just up the coast from you in Santa Barbra, so if yours are happy there, they should be happy here too.

Loved that article in the catalog!

I am looking for some of those mangel beet seeds, you know, the mammoth red? Would anyone be willing to swap me some for some heirloom tomato seeds (Riesentraube) and some Charentais melon seeds? They are from last year's crop and should germinate really well.

I'm definitley interested but have no experience saving seeds. Are there any types of tomatoes that run true. I understand hybrids do not come true is that right? What other types of seeds are savable?

Cluckyjay - What are "mangels" and what are they good for? I've read about them in magazines but never grow them. I like winter things that I can save to feed the chickens.

We went to a grafting demo today, too bad the wind was rattling the green house it was held in so loud we could hardly hear. But we came home with a handful of scions and a desire to graft the daylights out of a scrubby self started worthless peach tree! We can't really loose, at worst we need to take out that tree and put in one we want

It sounds like they may be getting "leggy".If they are two inches tall, and still only have tiny seed leaves, that is probably the issue. This happens when they are not getting enough light, and they grow tall trying to find it. Do you use grow lights, or have them in natural lighting? If using grow lights, they should be two inches above the plants. It could also be damping off. Could you post a picture =) ?
