Green thumb is itching, anyone else?

I found this little guy yesterday by my asparagus bed. Either I disturbed him, or the chickens scratched him up. Poor thing is alive, and awake way too soon. He will have to live in the house until the weather warms up, and then I can relocate him away from chickens and tillers.

Cool, eastern box turtle?

Dchicken207 , probably, but at that size I can't be sure.I never keep them very long. I usually find 5 to 12 a year when I start working the soil, and one year found eggs when I dug potatoes.I feel bad when I find dead ones, and try to put all of the living ones where they have a chance to grow up.

AAww so cute. My son is standing next to me and seen it and was amazed at the size. :)
He's only 4 and has never seen a baby turtle before.

When my son was younger he too found Bob, a small snapper. He put him in is pocket and thought Bob was dead. That was until the warmth brought Bob back to life.

DS gave Bob to the science teacher and he lived for many years in the aquarium.

Whoa, de'jevu.

Funny how that happens. D'ejavu that is.

Have you named yours?

It was very warm here today. I did nothing as it was my rest day. My volunteer job has gotten busy and harder. I did fix the switch in the garage. Anyhow I have the lumber for some new raised beds to add to the garden. I don't have any four foot fencing to make tents for some of the beds or I could plant some cold crops. I regret I didn't have them set up last year or the Parsley would be greener. As it is it won't survive.

My roses are ok though, but I worry about the new plantings of raspberries, gooseberries and currants. With no snow to insulate them I hope they survive. We usually have plenty of snow in winter but the ground is bare and sometimes wet. Not that I'm complaining.

I have some gift certs. for David Austin Roses. I plan to order three Crown Princess Margareta climbers.

Has anyone grown pumpkins? I have a friend who has a big garden he doesn't plan to use so i asked if he would roto till it so I can plant pumpkins to sell. I plan to plant Big max and one other. Any suggestions? Will Deer eat them? I'd like to plant some Indian Corn too but i suspect the deer will get it. I don't get deer here even though we are just miles apart.

Take care,

Rancher

Our pumpkins were too much last year and pretty well planted themselves. Thanks to the seed exchange, we are going to have a crazy number and variety this year! We picked up a bunch of composted horse manure and put it around the edges of the garden. I plan on scooping out small holes, filling with dirt and a couple of seeds and as the pumpkins/squash grow (on opposites sides of the garden!) we are going to poke them through the fence and out to the chicken zone. They don't seem to like the leaves, so I hope they are safe!

It was down right hot here today! Mom has been hinting about the last apple tree needing pruning, so did that, the orange and all the rest of the volunteer peach squad of trees. In past years, I would have had 5 or 6 truck loads to the green waste recycling, but this time I think we are down to what we can put in a couple of weeks worth of curbside pick up green waste. This might not seem like a big deal, but it has taken about 5 years and at least 50 trips to the dump to get the yard to a more manageable state!

I pulled out my seeds, but ran out of time and energy to pick out the ones to plant now, and the ones I owe to others!

We had another half dozen raspberries get ripe too!

Oh and the fruit trees are about to bloom here! And the strawberries have fruit too!

looks like it is a 2011 hatch. I have taken them to a fieldpreferably near a bush. Take a brick and shovel. Dig a shallow hole insert a stick in the hole..set the baby in near the stick and cover with the brick. Next ad a layer of leaves and a little dirt. wiggle the stick around to make a breathing vent and remove the stick slowly. The brick and leaves will protect and insulate the baby turtle and it will crawl out in the spring.

I am jealous. Can't even start plants here. Lord have mercy if we'd owned this place when the kids were young we'd have quite few things planted, like fruit trees. Plus I'd be younger and have more done. But such is life. Just be thankful for what I've got.

We don't need pumpkins but my plan is to sell them and donate the money to India. We help support an orphanage there. Last year Bro. Brian and Doc. Bailey went over to see the goings on and check things out. Bro. Bob (pastor) is very careful to not get taken, if you know what I mean. My egg money goes there too. Heaven knows we're not starving here. They also run a school over there too and the church helps supply things they need. We get reports every so often and Bro. Bob does a presentation and up dates the church. Well enough about that.

I plan to order a different variety of raspberry, gooseberry and currant plants. Never grow just one variety is my motto. If one doesn't take the other may. Kinda like "Don't put all your eggs in one basket". That motto might be a good reason to have more than one coop, too. Once group gets sick the others will still be there to feed you.

Well take care, Lord have mercy if I could make money talking I'd be rich. 'Course you do have to have something worth saying.
