You would never get any complaints from me.If I could get my husband off this Island I would love to live on a small farm. He's a veterinary and we can't leave. I tell him to buy me a place and he can keep New York and I promise I'll come visit. Ha Ha Ha

I used to love bushogging. sigh, miss my International 656 with hydro...
Oh well, on to the good stuff!! My lettuces and spinach are sprouting and I have 5 tomatoes sprouted, that went the pots last Saturday! 24 to go. Woot!!

I HATE MY TRACTOR. When I bought it I didn't know anything about tractors. Its one wheel drive with a diff. lock. No front end loader. Worst of all they hydralics went out again. Think I'm going to drive it into the river and rent it out as a boat anchor. I borrow my neighbors tractor now.

Amazing what you can trade for a few dozen fresh farm eggs with a real yolk!

I have always wanted to plant paw paw trees. How far apart did you plant yours? I have a weeping willow that I can't keep healthy and I'm thinking of removing it and replacing it with one.(Two)

I planted 100 strawberry plants yesterday. Cleaned out the raspberry canes. Cut down all the cedar trees growing near my new apple trees. Today planted 2 paw paw, 3 chestnuts, 3 hazelnuts, 2 figs, 12 western ground cherries. I have 6 blueberries, 4 grapes and 5 kiwi that I can't decide where I'm going to put them.

Was 80 degrees today, I shouldn't be sweating like this in March!!!

Hi, it's me again.

So I went to an Antique show and bought an old Cook Book. It's "Southern Cook Book , 322 Old Dixie Recipes"

It's go some really neat looking recipes. I looked it up on line and one E bay, it runs the gamut of prices from $13 all the way to over $100.

I paid $2.

Its a 1939 copy. Most for sale are from that date.

Anyhow it's really cool. Perhaps there are some here who have a copy? Some have put it on CD rom and are selling it for $1.95.

I will warn you there are some poems and drawings in it that are racist by today's standard, but that should not stop you from trying the recipes if you get a copy.

I also got a Cranberry recipe pamplet from " Eatmor" Cranberries. Of course I'll only try the simple recipes. Some sound gross. One had cubed turkey and celery and other junk. It's kind of like a jello mold.

It's a nice day and I think I'll set up my portable green house in the house. It one of those zipper type things they sell. TSC had them for $20. It should hold eight trays of seeds. Certainly plenty for this house.

I'm about to order more seeds. Burpee has one that is called Italian ice that I grew one year and it was really tasty. I got an e-mail for free shipping. That' s one thing that can be a real deal breaker when I buy from a catalog.

Well take care,

Rancher

FYI, Burpee has FREE shipping on any sized order. Just enter code MRFREE.

I wanted to order the Italian Ice tomato but not much else and they don't sell it in the store so I was able to order some seeds.

I already posted in a different gardening thread (days ago), but since this one seems to get more traffic, I'll post here too with my excited updates.

I planted three, 72 cell flats of marigolds, tomatoes and peppers. I don't have space for a garden at my house (rent, live in town, booo) but my parents have a decent sized garden. My grandma also has a small garden, along with many family and friends. I'm going to keep a few plants in buckets/boxes for my husband, as I don't eat veggies. I just like to grow stuff.

It's a good thing I have so many people with gardens because I am doing WAY better growing these seedlings than I expected. They're still small and have plenty of time to die on me, but I'm hoping that doesn't happen.

These numbers are estimates because I counted last night and I know more came up since then, plus some cells have more than one seed and it seems as though all my "extra" seeds are coming up as well.

Petite Mix marigolds-18 of 18
Queen Sophia marigolds-18 of 18
Cherokee Purple tomatoes-59 of 72 (I might have gone overboard)
Red Mercury peppers (red)-27 of 36
California Wonder peppers (green)-29 of 36
Yellow Belle peppers (yellow)-0 of 36....I wasn't able to get good bottom heat under these ones until the other 2 peppers came up..now they'll get some heat and hopefully grow for me
