Greener Pastures

Not much to free range on around here but we don't have the humidity, smog, traffic and very few predators. Hawks, straydogs and the ocassional coyote. A good fence will take care of the 4 legged ones. We've only had one hawk dare to try for our chickens/rabbits because my dogs are very protective of "their" pets. We do have flys in the horse barn in late summer but no mosquitoes unless you live near some water (we don't) or it's been a really wet year. We do however have high winds and dust. Sometimes LOTS of dust.

What about some of the bread basket states???? Dakotas, Kanas, Idaho, Wyoming parts of Montana. Although Predators can be anywhere.

The midwest state are cooler, but do have humidity, although some areas are better than some. For example Central Illinios and central Wisconsin have less humidity than near the lakes, or northwoods, and feed is gernerally easy to come by due to the large amount of farms in the area.

Colorado!

Most of the year it isn't too hot at all. Great free ranging! No humidity!!!!Pretty much no biting insects (much better than most other states)! Predators are in every state but as long as you put them in at night they would be fine. Best part is how beautiful it is here!!! Great mountain views + 300 days of sunshine a year!
Hope I was helpful, good luck!

Sorry to hear of your physical problems . I can't help with you a suggestion for a better climate . Every place I ever heard bragged up as having a mild climate was too hot for me ; the sweat starts rolling off me at around 75/80 if I'm doing anything LOL . Here in this portion of the mid-west [ though I'm actually east of the Mississippi river ] we have both extreems ; humid summers with heat reaching the 100s occassionally , cold winters dropping below zero at times . I think the best area I've traveled to was rural areas of southern MO to northern KY and TN , but the summers were too hot for me there . As far as the bad economy goes , that seems to be nation wide .
P.S. : In my opinion the days of free ranging are over ; I believe in electric fences to keep my animals in , others out including predators , plus a pair of bulldogs watching the property .

Steve, I too have always sweated profusely at 75+*. My parents come from the Old World where the winter temps are often -70* and often the pine trees explode into splinters. We keep our thermostat set at 57* for the winter (I am in just a short sleve shirt) as that seems to be just right for me these days. I used to live in Saginaw, Mich. , so I know what that is like. My wife's parents are from Minn., so we visited there from time to time. Too cold, too hot,too humid, and too many mosquitos. She has no desire to live in that part of the country as she was born and raised on the Pacific Ocean beach just N of San Diego. That is way too expensive now. I have to agree with you that free ranging just may be on it's way out. Coyotes killed both of my 90lb. & 95lb. solid muscle Boxers after they made mincemeat out of a Rottweiler, Rhodesion Ridgeback, and a few large mongrels that trespassed onto our farm. They were great watch dogs for 7 years. Animal friend 3, I tan very easily in the sun, however my wife is so fair that her skin sunburns very easily. She rarely stays outside for more than a few minutes here. But Colorado may be a definate possibility.

Sorry to hear about your current ailments Bossman. Colorado seems like a great choice to me as well. I know that is one place I would enjoy living after vacationing there several times. Not sure you would elude predators, but the weather would be much better.

This past year my wife traveled to do training new hires in Salt Lake City, Utah, SF, Cal., Dalles, Texas, and Atlanta, Ga.. She was there for 3 weeks each. She says that they were OK for 3 weeks , but wouldn't want to live there. Our son lives in Portland, Ore., so we visited them several times over the last 3 years- summer, fall, and over Christmas. We found that area to be most agreeable for both of us. There is a possibility of a job transfer to Salem or Portland, Ore. ,Vancouver, Olympia or Seattle , Wa. depending on current job vacancy.

Pacific Northwest my friend. If I didnt live in Michigan (had to laugh when I saw Saginaw) Id live out that way. Colorado would be my other choice and was glad it was mentioned. Coyotes are a fact of life but they can be addressed. Problem is nobody wants to do anything about it. They learn they can feast on cats, smaller dogs, and will even bait a guard dog into chasing them and then the other coyotes decend on them and at that point its just a numbers game. Smart, savy and as adaptable as any creature on the planet short of man. Its a shame but thats the truth. Id head that way, get myself a .30-06 becaues you can shoot a variety of grains so you could handle anything from a coyote to a bear with the same gun.

Build yourself some tractors, and eat well. Great fishing, hiking all sorts of activities to help keep you in shape and hopefully help you fight your ailments.

Wish you nothing but the best of luck on your search.
