I wanted backyard chickens for as long as I can remember. I grew up in the suburbs and no one in my family was ever interested in anything that relates to a more rural lifestyle. I begged for chickens as a teenager, and recall a lot of eye rolling from my extended family as they dismissed my desire and insisted I’d grow out of it.

I am now 39yrs old, and FINALLY have my first chickens! I currently have 4 that are now 16wks old. They arrived at my post office on my birthday, when they were less than 24hrs old, and it was a huge moment in my life! It meant so much to me to finally have reached this goal, and to begin my personal new year on such a note.

I ordered 4 females - one Golden Laced Wyandotte and 3 Easter Eggers. The Wyandotte was the first one I took out of the box, and despite my lifelong desire to raise chickens, she was the first chicken I’ve ever held! I looked into her soulful eyes, and was immediately reminded of Sophia Petrillo from the Golden Girls.

So they became the Girls. I named the Wyandotte, Petrilla, (changed the “o” to an “a” for a more feminine sound), and the others were named, Dot, Rose, and Ms. Devereaux.

One morning I heard what sounded like someone clearing their throat from the brooder. Ms. Devereaux was crowing! Ms. Devereaux is a cockerel! He is now named Devereaux without the Ms (which I think is a very handsome name for a very handsome fella), but I still refer to them collectively as the Girls. He doesn’t mind.

They’re doing great, and I just order three more baby chicks that will hatch on March 2nd. I am getting three bantams - a black frizzle, a buff silkie, and a Mille Fluer D’Uccle. I’ve so many questions!

Anyway, I discovered Backyard Chickens long long ago, well before I ever actually owned any chickens. It’s been a wonderful resource, and I’m happy to finally be a member.

Besides being a chicken fanatic, I am a geriatric RN, a mother to a teen and a young adult, a painter and a crafter.

I am very grateful for this group, and appreciate being added as a member!

I am very concerned about my chicken math! I am now obsessively researching what it would take to hatch chickens to sell on a small scale. The idea occurred to me as I was worried about ending up with too many chickens because I thought maybe if I weren’t the permanent owner of all of the chickens I’d like to meet...? This idea is in its infancy, and as I am a beginner in simply owning chickens, it will be awhile before I am able to hatch them to sell. Doesn’t hurt to start educating myself now, though!

I do several hatches a year, but local people in my state keep asking for some so I sell many. Some females I do grow out if they catch my eye, and I wait to see how they will lay before deciding to keep or sell them too. So, it all depend's on what breed that you have and what the demand is for them in your area.

The only reason I didn’t order a rooster to begin with was because I wanted to start very small to get my feet wet (after dreaming of a backyard flock for so long, I want to ensure I am a great steward of them, and thought it best to start small), and read that a rooster requires at least 10 hens. So far so good with Devereaux. He is SUPER kind and sweet.

My region seems to be lacking chicken breeders as far as I know. I’d like to research the demand more. Think I’d be able to do that on this forum (the only reason it took me so long to become a member is because of my online social anxiety - so this is my first experience with this kind of website)?
