Greetings from a new member!

My region seems to be lacking chicken breeders as far as I know. I’d like to research the demand more. Think I’d be able to do that on this forum (the only reason it took me so long to become a member is because of my online social anxiety - so this is my first experience with this kind of website)?
You won't find anything or anyone on here that will contribute to your online anxiety:thumbsup If so I'll be sure to give them thee worst glare ever! :D

I agree, you'll learn a lot with the hands-on experience. I did find that reading up on things helped me feel a bit more prepared. And it was reassuring to know my first batch of chicks were pretty much like everyone else's and not acting outside the bounds of "normal". :p
I also reconnected with a pal from nursing school who is just over a year into being a backyard chicken mama, and I’m so grateful for our friendship! She received a lot of panicked messages in the first couple of months of my girls’ lives, and we’ve laughed that I am like the nurse who calls the pediatrician in a panic even though I know what they’ll say because when it’s your kid You question all of your nursing knowledge. So I’ve done that except with chickens - no amount of reading about what it’ll look like when they were establishing their pecking order was as reassuring as hearing from someone I know that my girls were well within the range of normal!

He does look a little miffed! :lau
He certainly keeps them in line! If he thinks that one of them wasn’t being gentle enough while eating treats out of my hand, he’ll defend me! He’s a perfect gentleman while doing as much, phew! I’m quite pleased that I accidentally got a rooster!

I wanted backyard chickens for as long as I can remember. I grew up in the suburbs and no one in my family was ever interested in anything that relates to a more rural lifestyle. I begged for chickens as a teenager, and recall a lot of eye rolling from my extended family as they dismissed my desire and insisted I’d grow out of it.

I am now 39yrs old, and FINALLY have my first chickens! I currently have 4 that are now 16wks old. They arrived at my post office on my birthday, when they were less than 24hrs old, and it was a huge moment in my life! It meant so much to me to finally have reached this goal, and to begin my personal new year on such a note.

I ordered 4 females - one Golden Laced Wyandotte and 3 Easter Eggers. The Wyandotte was the first one I took out of the box, and despite my lifelong desire to raise chickens, she was the first chicken I’ve ever held! I looked into her soulful eyes, and was immediately reminded of Sophia Petrillo from the Golden Girls.

So they became the Girls. I named the Wyandotte, Petrilla, (changed the “o” to an “a” for a more feminine sound), and the others were named, Dot, Rose, and Ms. Devereaux.

One morning I heard what sounded like someone clearing their throat from the brooder. Ms. Devereaux was crowing! Ms. Devereaux is a cockerel! He is now named Devereaux without the Ms (which I think is a very handsome name for a very handsome fella), but I still refer to them collectively as the Girls. He doesn’t mind.

They’re doing great, and I just order three more baby chicks that will hatch on March 2nd. I am getting three bantams - a black frizzle, a buff silkie, and a Mille Fluer D’Uccle. I’ve so many questions!

Anyway, I discovered Backyard Chickens long long ago, well before I ever actually owned any chickens. It’s been a wonderful resource, and I’m happy to finally be a member.

Besides being a chicken fanatic, I am a geriatric RN, a mother to a teen and a young adult, a painter and a crafter.

I am very grateful for this group, and appreciate being added as a member!

It is nice to meet you!

I am very concerned about my chicken math! I am now obsessively researching what it would take to hatch chickens to sell on a small scale. The idea occurred to me as I was worried about ending up with too many chickens because I thought maybe if I weren’t the permanent owner of all of the chickens I’d like to meet...? This idea is in its infancy, and as I am a beginner in simply owning chickens, it will be awhile before I am able to hatch them to sell. Doesn’t hurt to start educating myself now, though!

First off welcome. I'm newish as well and have been received warmly. I first wonder where you ordered your girls(and gent) from. Simply because I ordered 11 hens and 1 rooster from meyer hatchery and the sexing was perfect. Maybe I'm lucky?
And next keep your surprise in mind while considering selling chicks. A lot of people lately are hobbyists and this forum is full of people with surprise roosters in a residential area that have a whole new dilemma, how to get rid of the rooster before the city is called. Could lead to a mistreated or unwanted bird.
Hope you are enjoying your new chickens and once again welcome.
