First off welcome. I'm newish as well and have been received warmly. I first wonder where you ordered your girls(and gent) from. Simply because I ordered 11 hens and 1 rooster from meyer hatchery and the sexing was perfect. Maybe I'm lucky?
And next keep your surprise in mind while considering selling chicks. A lot of people lately are hobbyists and this forum is full of people with surprise roosters in a residential area that have a whole new dilemma, how to get rid of the rooster before the city is called. Could lead to a mistreated or unwanted bird.

I bought mine from Meyer Hatchery, as well. I have been considering what I would do with roosters, not only the unsold ones should I try hatching them, but also in my upcoming bantam babies. That’s what got me researching bachelor flocks.

I’m definitely an “ideas” person, and a dreamer. Anything chicken related seems to send me down a rabbit hole from one idea to another. Fortunately I know enough to research first, and for the most part I am disciplined enough not to act on every idea I get.

Another thought I’m playing with is visiting nursing homes with my chickens (I am a geriatric RN)...which has led to the idea of pioneering resident roosters at some of the rural nursing homes in my area (ok - that’s a long shot, but as I said, I am a dreamer, and entertaining bad ideas usually leads me to my more practical ideas).

I believe nursing homes in UK allow visits by lap sitting hens. The residents enjoy it greatly.
