You won't find anything or anyone on here that will contribute to your online anxietyMy region seems to be lacking chicken breeders as far as I know. I’d like to research the demand more. Think I’d be able to do that on this forum (the only reason it took me so long to become a member is because of my online social anxiety - so this is my first experience with this kind of website)?
Oh my...that video is sweet!!! The rooster isn't sure what to think. You won't find anything or anyone on here that will contribute to your online anxietyIf so I'll be sure to give them thee worst glare ever!

I think you're right.I'm thinking that rooster is thinking, "If that kid doesn't stop doing that, I'm going to flog him."![]()

I also reconnected with a pal from nursing school who is just over a year into being a backyard chicken mama, and I’m so grateful for our friendship! She received a lot of panicked messages in the first couple of months of my girls’ lives, and we’ve laughed that I am like the nurse who calls the pediatrician in a panic even though I know what they’ll say because when it’s your kid You question all of your nursing knowledge. So I’ve done that except with chickens - no amount of reading about what it’ll look like when they were establishing their pecking order was as reassuring as hearing from someone I know that my girls were well within the range of normal!I agree, you'll learn a lot with the hands-on experience. I did find that reading up on things helped me feel a bit more prepared. And it was reassuring to know my first batch of chicks were pretty much like everyone else's and not acting outside the bounds of "normal".![]()
He certainly keeps them in line! If he thinks that one of them wasn’t being gentle enough while eating treats out of my hand, he’ll defend me! He’s a perfect gentleman while doing as much, phew! I’m quite pleased that I accidentally got a rooster! He does look a little miffed!![]()
I wanted backyard chickens for as long as I can remember. I grew up in the suburbs and no one in my family was ever interested in anything that relates to a more rural lifestyle. I begged for chickens as a teenager, and recall a lot of eye rolling from my extended family as they dismissed my desire and insisted I’d grow out of it.
I am now 39yrs old, and FINALLY have my first chickens! I currently have 4 that are now 16wks old. They arrived at my post office on my birthday, when they were less than 24hrs old, and it was a huge moment in my life! It meant so much to me to finally have reached this goal, and to begin my personal new year on such a note.
I ordered 4 females - one Golden Laced Wyandotte and 3 Easter Eggers. The Wyandotte was the first one I took out of the box, and despite my lifelong desire to raise chickens, she was the first chicken I’ve ever held! I looked into her soulful eyes, and was immediately reminded of Sophia Petrillo from the Golden Girls.
So they became the Girls. I named the Wyandotte, Petrilla, (changed the “o” to an “a” for a more feminine sound), and the others were named, Dot, Rose, and Ms. Devereaux.
One morning I heard what sounded like someone clearing their throat from the brooder. Ms. Devereaux was crowing! Ms. Devereaux is a cockerel! He is now named Devereaux without the Ms (which I think is a very handsome name for a very handsome fella), but I still refer to them collectively as the Girls. He doesn’t mind.
They’re doing great, and I just order three more baby chicks that will hatch on March 2nd. I am getting three bantams - a black frizzle, a buff silkie, and a Mille Fluer D’Uccle. I’ve so many questions!
Anyway, I discovered Backyard Chickens long long ago, well before I ever actually owned any chickens. It’s been a wonderful resource, and I’m happy to finally be a member.
Besides being a chicken fanatic, I am a geriatric RN, a mother to a teen and a young adult, a painter and a crafter.
I am very grateful for this group, and appreciate being added as a member!

I am very concerned about my chicken math! I am now obsessively researching what it would take to hatch chickens to sell on a small scale. The idea occurred to me as I was worried about ending up with too many chickens because I thought maybe if I weren’t the permanent owner of all of the chickens I’d like to meet...? This idea is in its infancy, and as I am a beginner in simply owning chickens, it will be awhile before I am able to hatch them to sell. Doesn’t hurt to start educating myself now, though!
