Hi All, I'm new here, and have had my 6 chicks for less than a week. I'm really interested in how people are raising flocks in colder climates. I've built an insulated dog house and think that the chicken coop will be in a similar design. Thanks for all of the information that you've shared in this site.

Hello and :welcome
How are you finding the chicks so far?
If you want to get more opinions on chicken raising in your climate, go check out your state thread in Where am I, where are you, as you'll find other chicken owners who live near you.
You certainly wouldn't want to ask me, it gets to 45*C here...
Anyhow, I hope you enjoy the site, welcome again!! :D

from Fairbanks! Which part of alaska are you in? We just keep our chickens in an insulated coop, right now no lamp, and if it gets too cold we just plug in the heat lamp and they stay pretty warm. It is best not to keep the heat lamp on all the time so the chickens have a chance to get used to the cold...

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

It gets subfreezing (well, subzero) here regularly and I do not supply any additional heat. It is very important that chickens have good ventilation without drafts, heat lamps can actually increase the risk of frostbite. Check in the Alaska thread, there are probably lots of folks that will share with you their housing methods.

Glad you found the group. I am new also and I have found this forum most helpful. I saw somewhere, where someone knitted little comb caps for their roo for the winter. Thinking out of the box, yes? He still looked handsome.
