Hello,
I am new to this forum. I have had a very small flock of hens (no roos) in the middle of a neighborhood w/ a tough HOA & laws against poultry....opps! My neighbors are cool, eggs whenever they want keep them quite. I started alittle over a year ago w/ 4 birds 1 rhode island red (josephine), 1 barred plymoth rock (mini), 1 black sex link (emma), & 1 americana (sara). I have recently added 3 more girls 1 8 month old buff orphington (cheyann), & 2 old english bantamn (thelma & louise). havent been to good since new girls have arrived (but thats on chicken behavior, check it out if you think you can help). I got the idea for hens to show my childeren what I got to experience as a child w/ my grandfather. So I visited the local feed stores during spring chicken time, built a modest coop (just below the fence line) in the backyard & have been in love w/ my girls ever since. They were cuddled as chicks & follow me around everywhere. I get about 1 dozen eggs every 3-4 days. What a pet, one that gives back. My dog has yet to lay me something I can eat...LOL. I have found quite a few people in the more rural areas around me that have small backyard flocks like myself. I envy all of you large land owners, but anyway it's a great hobby as long as I don't get caught. I have insured that my girls will be well taken care of if I do. I found this sight trying to figure out how to make my girls get along w/ each other. So I hope to enjoy this as much as I see ya'll do.
