I'm a newbie, and got my chicks March 1, 2014. I have 4 Ameraucanas and 5 Barred Rock. I had 6 BR, but lost a little one a week after getting them. I'm fulfilling a dream I've had since I was a little girl living in a city. My husband retired 2 years ago and we bought 11 acres in Central Oregon. Our property is a work in progress....chickens first, and then the hogs my husband wants to raise. He was an FFA guy, so he's also my teacher.

and Welcome To BYC! Sounds like you will have a nice little flock with your new chicks, sorry about the one you lost. X2 on TwoCrows suggestion of checking out the Learning Center, lots of good articles on chicken raising. You might also like to check out the BYC sister site, BackYard Herds, they have a whole section on pigs.
