Just joined the site and got my coop today.
Havent really navigated around the site so Im sure most of the questions I have already have an answer.
I have worked with chickens in the past being that I am a zoo keeper and we had some poultry at our facility.
However, these were ornamental and not for eggs. This is what I am looking getting into. I dont plan on getting the chickens till I am able to reinforce the fences so I have plenty of time for research.
I am thinking I want and have the space for 3-4 hens. What breed do you prefer and why? Can I get different kinds or is it best to keep the same kind together?

from Twentynine Palms in the California high desert!

Breed selection will depend on a few things. Do you want eggs daily? What is your climate like; do you need heat tolerant birds? In my case I prefer RIR or PR (production reds) because they are heat tolerant and when properly cared for pretty much lay a nice brown egg every day!

Check out the breed pages. There is a link at the top of the main forum page. And if you wait about 5 minutes, 20 more BYC'ers will pop in with their opinions! No shortage of friendly, helpful folks here!

Good Luck and Happy Holidays!

from Alabama. Glad you joined us. My favorites out of the really good egg layers that we have are our Easter Eggers. They're beautiful birds and they lay equally beautiful eggs. Have you tried the Chicken Breed Selection Tool yet? It might help you decide.
Good luck with your future chickens

There really is some outstanding breeds out there. I would go with your heart and that way you shouldn't go wrong. I'm a Orpington breeders so I could talk your ear off why I feel they are the best. Do some research and there is nothing wrong with having a mix flock, at least that way you can tell them apart, enjoy they will bring you much happiness!!!
