Hello and welcome! I got my first set of chicks last May. It was so fun to watch them grow. I thought they were quite easy to raise, (much easier than a puppy, for instance) but that depends on one’s temperament, expectations, time, and situation perhaps. I set up the brooder in our garage (I personally wouldn’t want them in the house unless it was just a few and just for a couple days). I ordered mine through the mail, and I think for me that was the hardest part of the chick-raising process because I didn’t have any control over when they arrived and what happened to them during that time.

I think your idea of waiting till it gets more spring like would be a great idea.

Hi! Welcome to BYC! Brooding chicks is easy. All the work is in getting set up for them, and then keeping their brooder, food and water dishes clean. The mama heating pad is a great way to go! This last time I brooded a few chicks I used a water bottle with a chicken nipple and didn't have the water spillage that I usually do, so that was really helpful.

Hello! Welcome to BYC!! I agree with DobieLover, having a broody raise chicks is great fun and much easier. Make sure to have a plan in place for excess cockerels when hatching.
